Google Maps is an online mapping and geography tool that allows you to quickly find and print a map location in the USA. It is very easy to use and this Quick Guide will explain just how easy it is to use this mapping tool to find a location in the United States. You can also find Google Maps on other countries and you can find a list including maps on Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom on the right hand menu of this tutorial.

How to Find a City or location.

1. Enter the name of the city in the Maps section - for this example we used New York.

2. Click on the Search button to either bring up the map.

3. To move around the map click and hold down your mouse button, the mouse pointer will change to a pan icon and then simply move the map around until it is positioned where you want it. It is very easy to move the map or pan using this feature.

You can also use the floating map navigation and zoom tools to do the same thing. At the top is a pan feature that is activated by clicking on the direction arrows. While at the bottom is a zoom in/out bar.

4. You can Zoom into an area and get a closer view of New York by using the Zoom in/out bar that sits over your map. You can Zoom into a very close up area by using this tool. To zoom in click on the + button or click further up the Zoom bar. To zoom out click on the - button or further down the Zoom bar.

Below is an example of a Zoomed in view of Madison Square Gardens.

Geographical Information System - Intelligent Maps

Google Maps is more than just a map, it is a Geographical Information System (GIS). A GIS system is where maps and information about the map is stored in a database. The example of using Google Maps as a GIS tool is demonstrated below. For most of us we will just think of the map providing related and relevant information, for example finding a hospital near an area or location.

The map shown below was brought up using a search for 1st Ave. Notice the small red ballon shaped tags on the map. The number is related to the list shown on the right of the map. These tags bring up additional information on the area or place that is referenced.

When you zoom into the map you see a the locations of these companies that are near 1st Avenue.

At the moment Google Maps is in beta development and we can expect this aspect of the mapping / GIS tool to be developed with more companies and locations listed. The example below is of the NYU Medical Center and shows how this GIS feature can be used by visitors to an area.

If you click on the ballon tag or label you will find additional information pops up on the map as illustrated in the screen capture shown below.

Notice there are a number of links on this pop menu, one of them shows 2051 more > ..... this brings up Google links that relate to this geographical area as shown below. This is very helpful when trying to locate a business, organisation or a facility.

The pop-up menu also allows you to get travel directions and you need to give the start location for your directions.

Quick Hint: You can't right click on Google Maps as this function of your browser has been disabled. However you can easily print, e-mail or link the map by using the small icons for this shown next to the map.
